Bed Bug

Many of the common bed bug questions we are asked follow the same theme.

Where do bed bugs come from?

How did I get a bed bug in my home?

What causes a bed bug infestation?

We have covered this topic in the past but would like to go into further detail about bed bug infestations and how they actually begin. Alas, Bed Bug Series Part 1: Where Do Bed Bugs Come From? Let’s begin with an overview of places where a bed bug can possibly find its way into your home or building.

It is known that a bed bug is an efficient hitchhiker.  It’s true that they can piggyback onto you, your clothing, or crawl into your personal belongings.  For example, a bed bug can discretely crawl into your luggage, book bag, purse, gym bag, etc. from practically any public place.  By understanding this, you can become more aware, and take some preventative steps to keep an infestation at bay.

Common Places Where You can Pick Up a Bed Bug

Our bed bug article series will provide you with tips to prevent picking up a bed bug from any of these places.  All it takes is one pregnant female bed bug and an infestation can begin within days.  Follow along with us and learn how you can prevent a bed bug infestation in your home.  The best cure for a bed bug infestation is prevention.  However, if you already have bed bugs, then taking immediate action is always best.

Did you know?

In many cases, when caught in the early stages, a bed bug infestation can be removed in a single pest control treatment.  But, when ignored, the infestation will become more severe, costing you more in pest control treatments, anxiety and stress.  So, save money, save time, and save yourself the stress of sleepless nights.  If you believe you have a bed bug problem, act on it sooner rather than later.

We have been monitoring the bed bug situation in the New York metro area since 2001.  Infestations continue to rise every year.  In our professional opinion, they aren’t going away anytime soon.  Even though they don’t transmit diseases, bed bugs do cause a great deal of anxiety.  Let’s face it.  A bed bug definitely has the “creepiness factor.”  And their bites can be itchy for some people.  But they are not life-threatening and an infestation can usually be curtailed by an experienced pest control professional.

General Tips

In most cases, it’s best to exercise common sense.  Knowing that bed bugs are terrific hitchhikers and crawlers, you will always want to keep your belongings off the floor in a public place.
Be discriminate when bringing items into your home.  If you find a great deal at a thrift store, garage sale, or on Craigslist for second hand furniture, make sure to inspect it thoroughly before bringing it inside.  There have also been news stories about bed bugs in retail stores and shopping malls.  Before bringing new items into your home, look them over first.  While in public places with lots of other people, know that if someone has an infestation in their home, they may be bringing a bed bug with them on their clothing or in a bag.   Stay vigilant and be aware of all the potential situations where you can pick up a stray bed bug during your daily activities.  By simply doing this, you can greatly reduce your risk of bringing home a hitchhiker bug.
