What is a Stink Bug?
New Jersey and New York are under attack by Stink Bugs, situated in the region commonly referred to as “Stink Bug Ground Zero”. According to Penn State College of Agricultural Sciences research,
The brown marmorated stink bug (BMSB), an insect not previously seen on our continent, was apparently accidentally introduced into eastern Pennsylvania. It was first collected in September of 1998 in Allentown, but probably arrived several years earlier.
Stink Bugs have a “shield shape”, they are brown in color, and the adult size is approximately 17mm long. Adults emerge late spring, usually around late April to May, and will continue mating and laying eggs through August. Stink bugs cause the greatest concern to the Agricultural Industry due to the damage they create to host plants. They do not cause any harm to humans, and therefore are considered to be a nuisance pest, especially to commercial facilities including restaurants, nursing homes and hospitals, property management companies, the hospitality industry, condos, and co-ops. When a stink bug is crushed, it emits an unpleasant odor, hence the name, “stink bug”.
