How to Control the Stink Bug

The best way to prevent the stink bug from entering your home or building is by taking some simple steps to prevent access.  A stink bug can enter your home or building through very small openings.  That’s why it is important to regularly inspect and make repairs before a stink bug has the opportunity to invite itself inside.  Here are three very effective tips to prevent stink bug entry into your home or building.

Stink Bug Tip #1:  Windows

Make sure you have screens on all of your windows.  Screens should be in good condition.  If there is a small tear in your window screen, a few dollars and a few minutes of your time to replace or repair it will make a big difference in stink bug control.

Stink Bug Tip #2:  Doors

All doors that are left open to let in fresh air should be protected by a screen door.  Your screen door should operate correctly by closing without any visible gaps.  Like windows, a small tear or gap in the door screen will present the opportunity to let a stink bug enter.  So, be sure to inspect the screening material and replace/repair any screens on your doors as necessary.  Make sure you have door sweeps installed to seal open gaps at the bottom of each exterior door.

Stink Bug Tip #3:  Vents & Openings

Any vents or openings to your home or building should be inspected carefully.  Installing screening material over vents is very effective in stink bug control.  Also, make sure all of the openings around air conditioners are completely sealed.

If you happen to see a stink bug inside your home or building, you can remove it by either capturing it by hand or using a vacuum suction hose.  Be aware that a crushed stink bug will emit its notorious odor.  So try to avoid crushing it, and if you do, swiftly remove the crushed stink bug immediately.  Sometimes, increased stink bug activity can enter your home even after you take the appropriate steps to prevent them from entering.  If this happens, professional pest control treatment will help.
